FLIGHTS + GETTING HERE

The Maison Salvadore is located next to L’isle Jourdain in South-West France, nestled between the cities of Poitiers in the North and Limoges in the South. Poitiers is just 1hrs 10mins by train from Paris, and there are direct flights from London and Edinburgh. Limoges airport offers direct flights from most UK airports, and many European cities.

For guests travelling on the below flights, or arriving into Poitiers at the same time, we will arrange a return shuttle from Poitiers airport to Salvadore for a supplement of €50 per person each way. Any guests travelling on different flights will need to make their own transfer arrangements.

SURROUNDING AREA

Situated in on the bank of the Vienne river, in the rural French countryside, life around the Maison Salvadore is not quite like anywhere else. Time feels not at all linear and you can taste the air as you breathe it in. People and the environment seem to have reached an understanding.

On arriving, it is evident that L’Isle Jourdan has the same simple amenities as it did 100 years ago; a boulangerie, hotel, café, tabac, bar, clothing boutique, a grocers and a market on Saturday mornings. Lunchtime and the dodo (afternoon nap) are sacred and all the shops close between twelve and two. One learns quickly to never disturb a local during these hours. One also learns to prepare for the fact that everything apart from the church is closed on Sundays.

In summer it can get very hot and people swim in lakes and rivers to cool off. 'Vide-greniers' often take place here and in neighboring villages, continuing the famous secular tradition where the city's occupants empty their attics and sell their contents for sales, alongside stands selling sausage sandwiches and coffee. All year round, there are other festivals of sorts and you would be forgiven for thinking that life has changed little here, for a very long time.

ABOUT MAISON SALVADORE

Salvadore is an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting artistic development, a refuge for makers and thinkers committed to nurturing creative growth through clay and related practices Set in the picturesque village of L‘isle Jourdain, The Maison Salvadore offers unique accommodation alongside an annual programme of ateliers and residencies, as well as hosting projects led by acclaimed artists and facilitators.

Grander than a farmhouse and more humble than a château, Salvadore can accommodate up to 14 people, across 6 rooms. There is a large communal kitchen with adjoining dining hall and the attic boasts a 80 sq meter studio that is suitable for both screenings and movement work. Outside the beautiful courtyard, connects to the ceramics studio, leading to a garden and terrace with beautiful views over the viaduct and surrounding countryside.

Guests sleep in light and airy rooms, on memory foam mattresses, shrouded in handmade, hand-dyed linens. Rooms are filled with specially curated artworks and lovingly restored antiques. In place of televisions are specially selected reading and listening lists, and in the bathrooms you’ll find homemade toiletries made from natural ingredients.
